Cervical Smears & Cancer

Cervical cancer is the third most common malignancy of the female genital tract. The majority (83%) of cases present as early disease, confined to the cervix. Primarily it is successfully treated by surgery, including fertility sparing techniques in those women who wish to maintain their ability to have children.

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, through a cervical screening programme. This involves regular cervical smears to detect pre-cancerous changes to the cervix that can be easily treated, thus reducing the risk of developing cervical cancer. Screening for these abnormalities is recommended from age 25 – 64 years, with a 3 yearly cervical smear. Abnormal smears are further investigated by Colposcopy, which is a detailed examination of the cervix by a certified doctor.

Much research has been conducted to identify the cause of pre-cancerous changes and cervical cancer. The majority of cases are caused by a virus called the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). In the autumn of 2008 the UK government have recommended the introduction of a HPV vaccine to reduce the risk of cervical disease. This will not replace cervical screening and it is important that women continue to be screened and treated for disease.

The Windsor Medical Group offer cervical screening, colposcopy and treatment of pre-cancerous disease of the cervix.
