Why is cautery to the cervix performed?
The cervix is cauterised to treat inflamed areas to help with the treatment of abnormal discharge or abnormal bleeding if the bleeding is from the cervix. The doctor performing the procedure will ask you if your smears are up to date and normal. If not, the procedure may be deferred until you have a normal smear or you are investigated for the cause of your abnormal smears.
What is cautery to the cervix?
Cautery to the cervix is treatment to the cervix with electricity or a heated instrument to reduce symptoms of bleeding or discharge if these are caused by areas of abnormality on the cervix. Cervical cautery can be performed without the need for general anaesthesia in the outpatient department. Sometimes however, an anaesthetic is necessary if the area to be treated is large or if it is difficult to see the cervix.
