Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a common disorder that is characterised by the growth of tissue from the lining of the womb outside the womb cavity, typically around the ovaries and in the ligaments behind the womb, but also on the surface of the bowel or the bladder.

The symptoms caused by endometriosis are varied. Some women with mild disease have very severe symptoms, and others with severe disease don’t know they have it! Symptoms include subfertility, pelvic pain, pain when moving the bowel, pain with intercourse and severe period pain.

The diagnosis of endometriosis is suggested by the symptoms described, and can often be felt in ‘nodules’ or lumps behind the womb. If severe disease is suspected and there are symptoms related to the bowel, an MRI scan is helpful in determining the extent of the disease. Ultimately, endometriosis is diagnosed by looking at it directly using keyhole surgery and a special camera.

Once diagnosed, endometriosis may be treated medically or with surgery, and each modality of treatment has its advantages and disadvantages, with differing rates of success depending on the severity of the disease. Some women elect not to have their endometriosis treated. This is quite safe as endometriosis is a benign condition.
