Fibroids

Fibroids are the most frequently found benign swellings in women of reproductive age. They are amongst the most common reasons for performing hysterectomy (45%). Typically, they occur in women who have never had children, who are overweight and those of certain ethnic origin (African or Philippino).

Only 25 – 30% of women with fibroids will experience symptoms. These may be non-specific, including pressure symptoms, abdominal distension, urinary frequency, constipation, heavy painful periods, recurrent miscarriage, premature labour, infertility, and pain during intercourse.

The site of the fibroid will often influence the symptoms experienced by the women but also, to some extent, the treatment. Some fibroids can be removed vaginally by minimally invasive surgery (trans cervical resection of fibroid). Alternatively, it may be easier to remove the fibroid by keyhole surgery (laparoscopic myomectomy) or with open surgery.

If fertility is not an issue the fibroid may be treated by cutting off its blood supply (embolisation) or by hysterectomy.
