Pain with the period is very common. Almost all women have some pain with their period but in the majority this does not cause significant disruption of their quality of life. This is because the womb is a muscle which contracts continuously, and more so at the time of menstruation.
A number of women, however, can have crippling dysmenorrhoea, which may begin several days before the onset of menstruation. Most commonly, no cause can be found for this and the reason such severe pain is experienced is because of imbalances in the hormones controlling the blood flow to the lining of the womb.
A condition that affects the womb’s muscle contractions is adenomyosis. In this condition the lining of the womb grows more deeply into the muscle wall of the womb than normal and disrupts the normal contractions. This may cause severe pain and is difficult both to diagnose and treat. Each case should be discussed on an individual basis with the consultant responsible for your care.
