This is bleeding occurring one year or more following the last period. The majority of cases are because of thinning of the lining of the vagina and/or womb and this can be treated with hormones. However, in a small number of cases the bleeding may arise from polyps (skin tags) within the womb.
Most polyps are benign but occasionally they can become cancerous. Thus it is important that the cause of your bleeding is diagnosed accurately and treated accordingly. In most patients this can be done with an ultrasound scan and biopsy but sometimes it is necessary to have a minor operation to look inside the womb cavity (hysteroscopy).
