Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation. It typically occurs in the early 50s and is often associated with hot flushes. However, it can occur at any time from the onset of menstruation. It is diagnosed on the basis of menstrual history, the presence of flushes and by a blood test to measure the levels of the hormones FSH (increased) and estradiol (decreased). In terms of fertility, whilst there is a very, very small chance of a spontaneous pregnancy, realistically the only way that a woman will be able to conceive is by using an egg from another woman.
It is essential that women with this condition take some form of hormone preparation to replace the missing estrogen if they are to avoid osteoporosis. This may be taken either as HRT if the woman would like to conceive or the combined oral contraceptive pill if she would not. In this age group (under 50yrs) there is currently no substantial evidence that these hormone treatments increase the risk of breast cancer.
