Vaginal prolapse is a common condition affecting up to 50% of women. Women at risk of developing vaginal prolapse include those with long labours, big babies, instrumental deliveries and increased number of children. Other factors which can cause or aggravate vaginal prolapse are recurrent coughs and constipation.

Patients can present with a sensation of something coming down, or there may be a visible bulge protruding. As well as this ladies may complain of bladder problems such as frequency of urine or difficulty emptying the bladder. They may also have difficulty emptying the bowel, or find sexual intercourse uncomfortable.
Treatment for this condition is managed in different ways depending on the severity of the condition, patients’ general health and desire for surgical intervention.
First line treatment would be to resolve any constipation or coughing. If the patient is post menopausal she may be commenced on topical oestrogen therapy to aid vaginal rejuvenation. Patients who do not desire surgical management or who wish to postpone surgery due to personal circumstance may opt to have a vaginal pessary inserted to elevate the vagina.
Ultimately approximately 10% of women have surgery performed to correct the prolapse.
